VAGINAL ULTRASOUND

  • a key part of the gynecological examination

  • non-invasive and painless (little discomfort from the pressure of the probe)

  • it is more thorough compared to transabdominal ultrasound as it provides more information about the female internal organs. However, in case of large fibroids or large ovarian cysts it may need to be supplemented by transabdominal ultrasound

before starting the transvaginal ultrasound, the patient must empty her bladder

she lies down on the gynaecological examination bed

the probe is covered with a special gel and latex pouch and then placed in the woman’s vagina

the patient can watch the test on a monitor and the test results are given immediately

  • the size, location and reserve of ovarian follicles

  • the size and composition of the cervix and the body of the uterus

  • the shape and thickness of the endometrium

  • the presence of masses,  their contents and their blood supply

  • the presence of fibroids, ovarian cystic fibroids, polyps of the endometrium or cervix

  • the existence and position of the interstitial glomerulus

  • the size of follicles in a patient with infertility or being treated for ovulation

  • early pregnancy
